Indians Close To Signing Dorssys Paulino
By Zach Links [July 2 at 9:34pm CST]
9:34PM: A deal with Paulino is close, but nothing is definite at this time, tweets Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer. The $1.1MM offer figure, however, is accurate.
8:57PM: The Indians do not currently have a signed contract for a Dominican prospect, tweets Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.
4:13PM: The Indians have signed Dominican shortstop Dorssys Paulino to a deal with a $1.1MM signing bonus, writes Ben Badler of Baseball America.
Paulino, 16, is said to have one of the better bats among infielders in this year's class. His 5-foot-11, 175 pound frame might mean that he's better suited for second or third base than shortstop.
The youngster is the son of Jesus Sanchez, a left-handed pitcher who played for the Marlins, Cubs, Rockies, and Reds from 1998-2004.

7404-2 win for the Clippers behind IL All Star Jeanmar Gomez who owns his 9th win, but Thursday in Cleveland is a day early for his next start. Germano fans the side for a save. 2 hits by Fedroff and

742Glad to see Chun Chen is back already, Dh'ing,l with a 2 run homer. Austin Adams allows 5 in the first; 6 on 10 hits in 4 2/3.
Adam Miller finished with good inning. In his last 8 outings, 11 innings, 6 hits,no runs, 5 walks, 10 K. But he still always rests two days between his 1 or 2 innings work

744The other Cook, Cole, lasts 7 allows 3 runs earned. Although BA doesn't accept him as a Hot Prospect, it's hard not to call Jesus Aguillar one. His 16th homer, a single, 2 doubles. He's HUGE 6-3 250 and he's RH and he hits homers and I can't see how he can't be a serious prospect. SS Ron Rodriguez with his 6th homer in only half the half-season. Alex Monsalve 3 hits, the catcher shoudl be considered a real prospect

Re: Minor Matters
745Indians second base prospect Jason Kipnis was scratched from Sunday's game with a sore right knee.
The cries for a Kipnis promotion have been growing louder over the past few weeks, though his removal from the lineup today was due to injury, not a call-up. Kipnis sports a .305/.389/.525 slash line with Triple-A Columbus, and he could be up with the big league club any day now.

Felix Sterling big deal of last summer not so hot this time around, 3 innings, 5 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks, does fan 4. Miguel Carmona the pitching start last night, 8 K in 3 innings, 2 hits and 2 walks. 18 year old SS Jose Martinez a 3 run home, hitting 345 in the first couple weeks.

Re: Minor Matters
748Not really anything too excited to report from last night's games. In fact it doesn't seem to me that we are seeing a lot of new prospects develop this season. Good night for our Oriental duo of Lee and Chen. And our slugger Jesus Aguillar doesn't stop hitting. And Tony Wolters and Jordan Smith look good way down in short season A.
Columbus loses 9-2. Highlight: C.C. Lee 2 1/3 shutout innings, 1 hit, 4 K, 0.00 ERA since elevation to AAA. He’ll be in Cleveland bullpen this September to help down the stretch. Barnes not so hot.
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb ... x&did=milb
4-2 Akron win. OK, but that’s all, for delaCruz 5 4 2 2 2 1. Chun Chen with 3 hits including a double. Juan Diaz a single and a double.
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb ... x_altaax_1
3-6 Lake County loses. Rayl’s shutout streaks ends, lasts only 1 2/3 3 runs, 3 hits, walk, 2 K. Urshela with a single and double. Moncrief 2 singles. Jesus Aguillar keeps going: 21st double, 2 walks. I’d like to see him in Kinston.
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb ... x_lanafx_1
1-2 MHV loses in the 9th. 40-something-round pick Nix with 7 shutout 3 hit walkless innings. Tony Wolters 2 hits. Jordan Smith a double and triple.
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb ... x_batasx_1
Kinston not scheduled. Arizona game suspended in the 5th up 3-1. deJesus with 4 1 hit shutout innings.

Re: Minor Matters
749Quick review of the Top 30 from BA and how they're doing isn't all that impressive. Order is close, based on memory, and I'll probably forgot a couple names.
1. Chisenhall. Not so great at AAA but in Cleveland already.
2. White: Good major league debut, before injury.
3. Kipnis: Hitting just fine in AAA
4. Pomeranz: Good ERA but too many walks. Stuck in Kinston way longer than expected.
5. Weglarz: Off the DL, not setting Akron on fire in a prolonger rehab assignment.
6. Knapp: all year on the DL.
7. Levon Washington: Lots of walks, lots of strikeouts, not many hits in his first season.
8. Tony Wolters: maybe better to start in NYPL than the Midwest league; he's hitting well and making plenty of errors.
9. Joe Gardner: breakthrough in 2010, very inconsistent in 2011.
10. Nick Hagadone: role firmly establshed as reliever, great in AA, improving in AAA
11. Ryan Blair: 2010 draft pick having lots of trouble in Low A
12. Felix Sterling: 2010 ace in the Arizona League surprisingly returned there this year and not impressive in his first outings.
13. Alex Lavisky: hit HR's for Lake County. Hitting less well in Mahoning Valley.
14. TJ House: back in Kinston, OK, nothing special.
15. Rondon: out for the season, although we knew that last year.
16. Jordan Henry: still no power, still walks a lot, but too many K and too few singles in Akron.
17. Zach Putnam: about ready for the Tribe bullpen, pitching well in Columbus.
18. Bryce Stowell: after great 2010, injury cost him half of 2011, rehabbing in A ball
19. Matt Packer: surprising big jump in 2010, leveled off to mediocrity at Akron
20. Cord Phelps: great AAA couple months; not impressive in the majors at bat or in field.
somewhere in the 20's:
21 or so. Kelvin delaCruz: like most of the Akron rotation he's not doing much to furhter his career.
22 or so. Josh Judy: firmly established as 8th man in Tribe 7-man bullpen. He's ready for more.
23 or so, maybe more like 16: Jeanmar Gomez: successful AAA starter ready to challenge for 4th or 5th starter role in Cleveland.
24-26: I seem to be missing some people here.
27 or so. Rob Bryson: back from a fracture, he's pitching very well in Class A bullpen
28. Tyler Holt: he walks plenty and steals some bases, but that's about it in Kinston.
29. Corey Kluber: AAA rotation anchor, as in dragging them down.
30. Giovanny Urshela: I'll assume he's still fielding up a storm, but his offense is not impressive.
31. Zach McAllister: starting tomorrow for Cleveland; a big rebound in 2011 although he's not a hard thrower and he has been somewhat less effective the past month.
Others close to the Top 30:
Ezequiel Carrera: another CF with speed, walks plenty, plays good defense. Major league ready although uncertain if he's more than "4th OF"
Austin Adams: in AA rotation, registers plenty of K, and plenty of BBs. Probably belongs in bullpen.
Giovanni Soto: very young for Carolina League, he was quite effective, now on DL. K>IP.
Scott Barnes: kind of under the radar, he's moved up to AAA rotation, still only 23. K>IP by a long shot but walks are high and not as consistant as needed.
Breakout successes:
Jesus Aguillar 20 year old 1st baseman with 21 doubles, 16 homers, lots of walks, 10 errors and he's already 250 pounds. BA has not written a single word about him to the best of my knowledge.
Michael Goodnight. 2010 draftee at Lake County had BA against of 172 until a couple recent lesser successes.
Maybe: Ron Rodriguez SS in LC htting very little and never walks, but plenty of power for a teenager. Question: is he a defensive whiz or liabilty?
Mike Rayl: in his 3rd season he has great Low A numbers, but is he merely a 22year-old roster filler?

Re: Minor Matters
750All of which seems to suggest our deep bullpen will get deeper.
Some starting material in AAA. Pomeranz not on such a fast track.
Not much help for the thin outfield.
Kipnis and Chisenhall will fill in the infield. Not much behind them.
No budding superstars on the horizon. Chen is coming along. Aguillar is worth watching.
2010 high school picks are a long way off but haven't come out blazing.
Final grade for the 1st half: C.
