Here's San Diego's top 10 per BA:
https://www.baseballamerica.com/teams/1 ... ?year=2019
There are no outfielders on the list if you except Francisco Mejia who might well wind up in LF since he doesn't work hard at improving his catching,
Nearly all the rest are pitchers who it is illogical for us trade Kluber for.
Here, however, is a guy we could use:
3. Luis Urias | 2B
No. 3 Luis Urias
Born: Jun 3, 1997
Bats: R Throws: R
Ht.: 5'9" Wt.: 185
Signed: SIGNED -- Mexico, 2013
TRACK RECORD: The Padres purchased Urias’ rights from Mexico City for $100,000 when he was 16 in a deal facilitated by club owner Alfredo Harp Helu, a minority stakeholder in the Padres. Urias wasted no time validating the deal. He won the California League MVP award in 2016 and led the Texas League in on-base percentage in 2017. In 2018, Urias hit a team-best .298 at Triple-A El Paso and made his major league debut at age 21.
SCOUTING REPORT: Urias has the gifts of a potential .300 hitter. Short but mighty, the 5-foot-9 Urias takes advantage of his compact strike zone with a quick, level swing that produces hard line drives to all fields. He has an elite eye and rarely chases, forcing pitchers to come to him and punishing hittable pitches. Urias’ build and swing aren’t conducive to home runs, but with his quick bat he can square up a fastball and drive it out. Defensively, Urias is an above-average second baseman with sure hands, clean footwork and an impressive vertical leap to go with an above-average arm. He can fill in as an average shortstop, although his range there is stretched.
THE FUTURE: Urias’ pure stroke and elite eye give him a chance to contend for batting titles at his peak. He’ll be the Padres’ everyday second baseman in 2019.
Put him at second, move Kipnis to Left Field; Martin is in Center; all sorts of guys share right. Doesn't sound so bad to me.
Urias sounds a lot like Ramirez a few years ago. We'd have an outstanding infield of overachieving little guys
Re: General Discussion
10322Fernando Tatis JR is their best prospect. He could be our long term 3rd baseman with Jose at 2nd.
The deal would have to include either him or Urias. A package with one of them and Naylor would get me interested.

Re: General Discussion
10323Article in today's Arizona Republic says Padres 3B Wil Myers is moving back to the crowded outfield and they are still in the market for a 3rd baseman. Outfield mix includes Renfroe, Reyes, Margot, Jankowski and Cordero.
Re: General Discussion
10324They won't trade Tatis for certain. He's up among the top prospects in the minors. But Urias sounds like a reasonable option for us but it doesn't sound like they want to deal him either.
Re: General Discussion
10325Yeah, and the Indians wouldn't trade Wright in a deal for Pedro either. What did that get them? Same thing it's going to get Padres. Nothing.
Look, we are not talking about the next Mickey Mantle here. Tatis and Urias are good prospects, but far from sure fire hall of fame.
The Red Sox traded Moncada, who was the top rated prospect in baseball at the time, and a highly ranked pitching prospect, Kopech, (and others) for Chris Sale. They ended up getting an ace, and a World Series title.
You want a 2 time Cy Young award winning ace you have to pay for it.
You want to start the conversation with, we aren't going to trade any of our top 5 prospects, then the conversation ends there.

10326another FA OF signs a deal. Hard to feel we'll be any worse off with Naquin and Luplow
Former White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia will get a chance to redeem himself in Tampa Bay after agreeing to a one-year, $3.5 million deal with incentives, The Athletic reported. Garcia can make another $2.5 million in incentives in 2019, according to the report.
After being selected to the American League All-Star team in 2017 following a ragged start to his major league career, Garcia regressed in 2018, hitting .236 with 49 RBI in 93 games while battling knee and leg injuries. He hit a career-high 19 home runs, but an inability to stay healthy marred his season, and his overall stay on the South Side. Manager Rick Renteria pulled Garcia from a game against the Royals in August for a lack of effort after he dogged it down the line on a first-inning fly ball. Though Garcia was apologetic afterward, the veteran outfielder was non-tendered by the Sox after the season when the team couldn’t work out a trade.

10327Cavs getting a big of media attention for the first time this year after the comings and goings of Patrick McCaw.
Re: General Discussion
10329Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Cody Allen's contract with the Angels is worth $8.5 million, with $2.5 million more available in games finished incentives.
It's a straight one-year deal that doesn't include any options. Allen surely was hoping to land a nice multi-year contract this offseason, but he reportedly wanted the opportunity to close and he should have a clear path to the ninth inning in Anaheim. The veteran reliever held an unsightly 4.70 ERA last season and his strikeout and walk rates went in the wrong direction. However, he still missed plenty of bats and looks like a good bounce-back candidate for the Angels on a one-year pact.

Re: General Discussion
10330nice deal for Cody. He's a good guy so I'm happy for him and his family.
And In other bullpen developments for contenders:
Yankees signed Attavino, another big K arm for their pen.
And the Indians are hopeful that Henry Martinez might do better in the majors than he did for Columbus. and/or that Nick Sandlin makes to the majors a year after he was drafted as Cody was several years ago

Re: General Discussion
10331I think it kind of goes without saying that I wonder if Tito pitched the crap out of Miller, Cody and Shaw.
That said, part of it was winning all those games (they didn't pitch if we were behind) and going into the postseason those years.
Bullpen guys can get burned out.

10332Ricky Romero has announced his retirement from baseball.
Romero was an All-Star back in 2011 but was never the same after that and hadn't pitched in the majors since 2013.

Re: General Discussion
10335Harper and Machado still unsigned - and that is stalling other options for a lot of teams.
