Andrew Calica hit a ton 2 summers ago at Mahoning Valley, not so impressive in Lynchburg last year or in April with AKron, but he's hit .404 in April to bring his season to 311, he doesn't walk a lot [5 times], some doubles power [9] and one homer a couple nights ago; he can run a bit, 6 steals, hasn't been caught. If nothing else he gives Akron a better bat than what they've stuck with the last few years with Myles and Jordan Smith and Paulino.

Ka'ai Tom 5 hits Friday surged him over .200, he has some power, 5 home runs. A 5-9 185 LH OF, makes me think of Brian Giles but that's wishful thnking

From the Pluto article Rusty posted --

3. Top prospect Triston McKenzie developed a forearm problem late in spring training. He has been pitching in extended spring in Goodyear. In about two weeks, he is expected to report to a team - possibly Class AA Akron. McKenzie was the Class A Carolina League pitcher of the year with a 12-6 record and 3.46 ERA at age 19 last season.

LOL UD!

There there, don't feel bad. I'm sure the reason your boys only mustered 1 run today and lost last two games was because they were overcome with emotion at the electricity and atmosphere at Huntington Park!

Clip show did indeed win today, 2-1, behind the pitching of Bieber, as UD said. 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 8 K.

Yandy had day off, or beating would have been worse.

Mejia might as well had day off, another 0'fer.

.

Ducks lost 13-10. DeMasi gave up 8 earned in 2+... Egads.

Castro was 1-3, a triple, with 2 walks. ... Marabell continues to stroke it, 3-5 with a double and a homer, 3 RBI. Hitting .333 now.

.

Hillcats scored 6 in the bottom of the 8th to win 9-5.

Longo 2-4. ... The Buckeye, Tully, having an up and down year. Will have a good outing followed by a stinker. Today was the turn for his stinker. 5 earned in 5 IP. 7 hits, 6 K.

.

Captains lost 7-4. ... I think Wade was hurt, he was replaced mid game. ... Oscar and Benson both 1-3. Jones 2-4. Not an extra base hit among them. ... Hillman 7 earned in 4+ innings on 9 hits. Yeah, if you haven't written him off yet time to do so.

Quite a month of May for the Akron outfielders.

Calica for the season is hitting 315. In May: 404/429/558 [987]
Tom for the season is at a modest 224, but walks plenty; in May: 268/368/464 [832]
Marabell's 6th homer yesterday, he's at 333. In May 364/410/623 (including 5 of the homers) OPS: 1033

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 21, 2018

JOEY MENESES & SHANE BIEBER HONORED AS
INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

The International League announced today that Lehigh Valley first baseman Joey Meneses and
Colunbus right-handed starter Shane Bieber have been named the League’s Batter and Pitcher of the
Week for the period from May 14-20. Meneses becomes the League’s fisrt player to claim multiple
weekly awards in 2018 (April 30-May 6) and combines with the previous Pitcher of the Week Cole
Irvin to make the IronPigs the first team to collect three weekly awards. Bieber is the first member of
the Clippers to be so honored this season.

SHANE BIEBER, Columbus Clippers

IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Highly-touted pitching prospect Shane Bieber picked up his first win at the Triple-A level on Sunday,
capping an impressive week in which he allowed just one run on eight hits without walking a batter
over a League-high 14.2 innings of work. He appeared to be headed for his first win Tuesday when
he departed his outing against Gwinnett with a 3-1 lead, but the bullpen couldn’t hold the edge in an
eventual 5-4 Clippers extra-innings victory. Bieber was on top of his game Sunday, tossing 8.0
scoreless innings of three-hit baseball with eight strikeouts as Columbus defeated Charlotte, 2-1.
Bieber now has an ERA of just 1.32 through his first four starts with the Clippers since being
promoted from Double-A Akron on May 3.

22-year-old Shane Bieber is in his third season since being selected by Cleveland in the 4th round of
the 2016 draft. He has yet to make his Major League debut. Bieber is a native of Orange, California.

LHP Sean Brady promoted from Akron
Not because of anything he's done lately, but Civale is on the DL. Brady this season has an ERA of 4.17 and a WHIP of 1.61; allowed 18 baserunners in the 8 innings he's worked in his last 2 starts. But someone has to fill the spot vacated by Ogando.
