Catching up on posts from earlier ... Our system may be lacking superstar types but I wouldn’t say we just have a bunch of JAGs. I think some injuries and slow starts have hampered our enthusiasm.

I think we have 3 legit starting pitcher prospects in Bieber, McKenzie, and Morgan. With McKenzie having a very high ceiling. These three are separated in our system too so we could get some help each year for 3 years starting next year. Also, we have some other SP’s that have been impressive at times and wouldn’t be shocking if one of them become a legit major leaguer. A guy like Civale or someone like that.

I know relievers don’t get many excited but we also have some legit talented relief prospects sprinkled throughout.

As far as players, Mejia has started off slow. Trying him at other positions couldn’t have helped. And he’s been slowed by minor injuries. But he is a legit top prospect.

I personally think Yandy and Allen will be good major leaguers.

Bobby Bradley has big time power. At the very least he should end up a Mike Napoli type. But I hope for more. He’s working on cutting down on the K’s.

And the two youngsters Civ mentioned we signing internationally I know the club is high on.

That’s not to mention Benson, who hit another homer tonight. Longo, Collins, Jones, and other talented guys who may emerge.

The cupboard isn’t bare, IMO.

Seagull,

This year we are getting contributions from Clevinger and Naquin. Next year it will be Allen, Yandy, Mejia, and Bieber. The year after it will be McKenzie and Bradley.

Or trade bait.

2 or more guys a year coming up and helping out is really good. I really have no idea what you’re talking about.

Civ, some news on our signees you mentioned ...

that means the Indians like them a lot.

I don't want to be negative about the farm system but Bieber and Morgan are the only guys having anything other than decent starts to the season.
I'm more positive about Benson than Hillbilly, especially his willingness to take lots of walks. His stats may always look worse at first glance but his peripherals - power, walks and steals -- could be way above normal. Capel could be a many tools OF who's a year or two ahead of Will.
I also an intrigued by some of the power arms in the bullpens with especial eye on Karinchak.
I was disappointed that Bradley was returned to Akron and more so that he is doing worse than last year.
I am still positive about Chang and Castro's ceilings.
Yandy as you know doesn't do much for me. With his total lack of power he must hit 300+ to have any shot at major league success and he's getting old for AAA, Nolan Jones perhaps will have a chance to be a success at 3rd, but Chang seems more likely.
I'm getting tired of waiting for McKenzie but he's still very young and apparently nothing serious requiring surgery so I'll try to be patient.
I can see Valera and Bracho moving high on our prospect list quicky, Valera already made BA's top10

Heck in the more immediate future I was encouraged by Plutko's spot start when we needed him!

Sure he isn't a big upside guy but solid 4th starters in the bigs do not grow on trees and he may just have that 5th starter role in his sites. Tomlin to the pen.

I'm with HB on Clevinger. It's not often in MLB that a kid like that comes up and gives the big team that kind of starting pitcher. Huge props to the development system for that one!

puling out my BA Prospects Handbook, I note that we have more grade 55 and higher prospects than lots of teams

Grade 60: Mejia, McKenzie
Grade 55: Bradley, Jones, Valera, Benson, Bracho, Holmes, Freeman
Which means that only 4 of our 9 highest ceiling players are in action so far. and our top performer Bieber has had his projection boosted as he's moved into the BA Top 100.

Just for comparison sake, other ALC teams
Chicago: 1 grade 70; 1 grade 65; 1 grade 60; 6 grade 55. They're well recharged after recent trades
Detroit: 3 grade 60; no one else over 50. They're a wreck of a system
Kansas City: 3 grade 55. They're in worse shape than the Tigers
Minnesota: 1 grade 65; 3 grade 60; 4 grade 55 That looks solid.

So it appears that we have at least as many well-regarded prospects as our competition but most of the highest ceilings are a long way off from being met.

to exemplify those grades BA uses the following explanation and examples:
65-70 Perennial All Star or No. 2 starting pitcher EXample: Mookie Betts, Zack Grienke
60: Occasional All Star or No. 3 starter or top notch reliever Examples: Charlie Blackmon, Kenley Jensen
55: First Division Regular, No. 3/4 starter, closer Examples: Jean Segura, Zach Britton

System Rankings, BA put Cleveland at No. 21 of the 30 teams saying in sum: "The Indians have two top prospects but after that there is a large group of good but not great talent. The Indians' excellent player development staff will likely help a few of them exceed expectations, a la Yan Gomes and Jose Ramirez"

Civ, just because I didn't specifically mention a guy doesn't mean I don't like them. Castro, for example, I have been high on him for some time. More than anybody else around here. But I was just mentioning a few of the more known names in short to make a point.

Really, the only disappointment I have right now in our system is that we don't have any great options at reliever in the upper system to bring up and help right now.

You would think that would be one of the easier spots to fill. Even if you move a SP to RP. But we don't have anything to get me excited.

If we hadn't of traded him Feyereisen would have been an option right now. But I looked at his stats in Yankees AAA club and he is doing OK but not lighting it up. So guess I shouldn't cry too much. But he was one I liked and disappointed we had to include him in that deal. It left us a little bare in the pen.

Maybe we'll get a little lucky and someone like Ramirez will come out of nowhere, but not holding my breath. But I would try anybody over McCallister right now.

I didn't think you had mentioned everyone you like. And if you're anything like me, names may slip my mind and reappear later.

Here's the BA report for Monday starting with non-Indians prospect:

• Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 3B, Blue Jays. This may seem repetitive, but Guerrero was great again last night. He went 3-for-4 with a home run, raising his batting average to .405, which is fourth best in the minors. And as a reminder, the average Eastern League player is 24 years old. Guerrero is 19.

CLE AA Bradley, Bobby 1B 5 0 0 0 .186
CLE AA Castro, Willi SS 4 0 0 0 .224 BB (12)
CLE AA Krieger, Tyler LF-CF 3 0 1 1 .211 BB (7)
CLE AA Mathias, Mark 2B 4 0 0 0 .270
CLE MAJ Allen, Greg CF 4 1 3 0 .238 3B (1)
2 of our 4 teams were off yesterday and for some reason BA left out the Class A guys anyway
