civ - who knows but.....this offseason was a nightmare for 30+ years old guys. There was a glut of them and most of them wanted multi year deals which teams were NOT giving out.
-- There was an unexpected reunion in the Kansas City Royals' camp Saturday: Welcome back, sort of, Mike Moustakas.
After setting the Royals' single-season home run record with 38 last season, Moustakas filed for free agency. He rejected a $17.4 million qualifying offer in November.
Moustakas, however, never received the multiyear, mega-million dollar contract he and his agent Scott Boras anticipated.
The Royals signed Moustakas to a one-year, $6.5 million contract this week with a mutual option for 2019. Moustakas can make another $2.2 million in incentives this year based on plate appearances, beginning at 225.
Moustakas' numbers last year? .272 avg 38 homers .314 OBA .521 SLG. .835 OPS and 85 RBIs
Oh, and he plays great defense at 3B and is only 29 years old.
That tells you all you need to know about last winter for hitters and pitchers who wanted much more than the market would give them
My opinion is that after a good 2017 season Melky wanted maybe 2 years MLB contract and teams offered him either minor league deals or 1 year deals so he balked (Bautista, etc did the same). At this point basically those guys are being forced to crawl back.
