Katherine Berman, Wife of ESPN’s Chris Berman, Is Killed in a Car Accident

Katherine Berman, the wife of the veteran ESPN sportscaster Chris Berman, was killed in a car accident in Connecticut on Tuesday.

The two-car crash happened about 2 p.m. in Woodbury. Ms. Berman, 67, was killed, as was a man in the other vehicle, Edward Bertulis, 87.

According to a state police report, Ms. Berman’s Lexus struck Mr. Bertulis’s Ford from behind. Her car veered off the roadway, went down an embankment and overturned. Mr. Bertulis’s car hit a utility pole.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Ms. Berman was wearing a shoulder and lap belt, the report said. Mr. Bertulis was not. Airbags deployed in both vehicles.

The Bermans had been married since 1983. The former Katherine Alexinski was a fourth-grade teacher in Waterbury at the time of her marriage. She was a graduate of the University of Connecticut. The couple had two children, Meredith and Doug.

“This is a devastating tragedy and difficult to comprehend,” John Skipper, president of ESPN, said in a statement. “Chris is beloved by all his ESPN colleagues and for good reason: He has a huge heart and has given so much to so many over the years. We know how much his family means to him and all we can do at a moment like this is give him the love and support he will surely need at this hour.”

There was an outpouring of supportive messages from the world of sports.

Mr. Berman, who turned 62 on Wednesday, has been with ESPN since just after it launched in 1979. He has recently stepped away from many of his on-air duties at the network, including hosting “Sunday N.F.L. Countdown,” which he did for 31 seasons.

A friend of mine is doc that splits time working in local E.R. We were going fishing one day and I jumped in his truck and didn't put my seatbelt on. I spent the next hour hearing horror stories.

We should buckle up..

(I did read that Mrs. Berman was wearing seat belt, but other guy who died was not)
