Yandy Diaz and Irvin Del Rio
Cuba Friendship Reunited With Lions

Monday 12 | 10:01 am

Naranjo Diego Cevallos

During the tenth week of the championship, the Lions of Caracas bought the Cuban pitcher Irvin Del Rio to strengthen their pitching. That deal also sealed the reunion with his old friend Yandy Diaz , who have not seen each other in five years.

"I knew he was coming here because Irvin told me" said Diaz, who has been one of the best players of the LVBP championship season. "When I was told I was very happy because it was a long time without seeing him."

"Yandy and I are friends since childhood , " recalled Del Rio. "We are both from Villa Clara , from young children we played in the younger leagues because we are of the same age and we also played on the National teams".

The friendship of both players grew as they advanced through the leagues. "We know each other since we were eleven or twelve years , " said Yandy . "We played against each other and we played together, but always, we played as friends. We have had a rivalry because he always told me he was going to strike me out and I told him I was going to get a hit".

"As children, I was playing with Sagua La Grande, which is the town where I lived," said Diaz. "Irvin played with Remedios which is the municipality where Irvin grew up. From there we were selections of Villa Clara as fourteen year olders and from there we were always together."

At the time that Del Rio arrived in Venezuela, I was there to speak with him . " It was a very nice reunion. I had not seen him in years. He's like my brother , " added Yandy Diaz. "When we got together , we talked about things when we were kids back in Cuba and also talked about how things are here in Venezuela, it was a nice meeting."

"It was about five years since we last met," said Del Rio, who signed a contract with the Lions when he contacted his old friend. "I knew Yandy was here on this team and since I knew I was coming to Caracas we talked a lot about that."

Del Rio is a pitcher who is not known in Venezuela , but his good references were one of the reasons why the coaching staff and management pushed hard for him. "Since we were in Cuba, Irvin has always been a quality pitcher and I think will be the same here."

"I keep interests in all leagues of baseball, so I knew this league (LVBP) is very good," said Del Rio. "Caracas is one of the two most popular teams in Venezuela and I am proud to be on this team. I worked as a starter, but for now I think I will be used in long relief. In Mexico they used me as a closer. "
“Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday's success or put its failures behind and start over again. That's the way life is, with a new game every day, and that's the way baseball is.”

Matanzas won twice in the double program Granma yesterday and became, in the absence of 20 games to exhaust the regular schedule, in the first semifinalist of the current Cuban baseball season.

In closing, the Matanzas totaled 55 victories in the campaign, which is already unattainable for the occupant of the fifth. That win got from the mound lefty Yoannis Yera, who reached 11 smiles with two setbacks.

In the clash, Yordannis Samon (Photo) completed 100 hits in the contest. The clash was decided in the fifth chapter, where 14 runs, six by Granma sorrel and eight riposte by red crocodiles were noted.

From now are only three places for the always hot playoff games and judging by the balance of victories and defeats of the other five applicants, Ciego de Avila, defending champion Villa Clara and Granma, should not accuse trouble making the grade .

That does not mean that Holguin and Camaguey are eliminated, but the task is arduous. They are separated from the fourth position to 7.5 and 8 respectively.

[ Check the schedule, it looks like December 28th is the last scheduled date meaning the semifinals start the first week of January ]

LIGA DE BEISBOL DOMINICANO

Erik Gonzalez (SS-3B, Leones del Escogido) 1-4, R, RBI. Gonzalez picked up his seventh RBI in just his eleventh game of the offseason in Leones del Escogido’s 4-0 win. Gonzalez now has hits in eight of his last ten games played, and he also currently has a four-game hitting streak. Gonzalez got a late jump on getting into live games this offseason, but once he hit the field in December he has picked up where his impressive regular season left off. Gonzalez hit .296 last season in Columbus, and showed he has an impressive glove that is capable of being played at multiple positions.

Abraham Almonte (OF, Toros del Este) 1-3, BB Just one day after seeing his seven-game hit streak get snapped, Abraham Almonte wasted no time getting a hit to start a new streak. Almonte has been on fire of late as he went 13-for-30 at the dish during the aforementioned seven game streak. In all, he is now hitting .340 with seven RBIs in 12 games down in the Dominican.

Michael Martinez (2B-LF, Estrellas Orientales) 0-4, SO. Martinez had a rough night at the plate, failing to record a hit in his four opportunities. He now has just five hits in his last twenty-eight at-bats which equates to a .179 average. Martinez has never been known for his bat, but you would like to see him be able to pick up a few more hits just based off his experience alone. Even if he fails to hit, Martinez will still always have some value because of the flexibility he gives a manager defensively.

LIGA VENEZUELA BEISBOL PROFESIONAL

Jesus Aguilar (1B, Leones del Caracas) 1-3, R, HR, RBI, BB. During the second inning of Monday night’s game Jesus Aguilar launched his sixth home run of the offseason in Venezuela. Aguilar has done well so far this winter as he is now hitting .293, but perhaps even more impressive is his on-base percentage is now sitting at .402. This shows that he is being patient at the plate and drawing his walks even not during a hot streak.

Erik Gonzalez and Jorge Polanco are two of the key players
in which the Leones have pinned their hopes of qualifying.

DEBUTED TOGETHER IN 2013 AND HAVE BEEN VITAL TO THE FRANCHISE

Santo Domingo

They met four years ago in the Class A Media with one goal in mind - to play in the major leagues. Their common nationality brought them together with a greeting and a handshake.

A distance of almost 400 kilometers separates their birth plaes. While one trains in Fort Myers, home of the Twins of Minnesota, the other one does it in GoodYear, home of the Indians of Cleveland, among the cacti of Arizona.

Their beginnings and development in baseball also have very different histories. On the one hand, Erik González has always followed in the footsteps of his father, Ramon, who raised him from a very young age and was one of more than 20 players who have signed for professional contracts from the village of Mamey, Puerto Plata. He even went so far as to be on the national team.

On the other hand, Jorge Polanco observed his first light of day in the Restoration neighborhoods, just behind the gates of the Tetelo Vargas Stadium and affirms that in several occasions he was caught by the police when he tried to climb the walls of the facility with the purpose of going to train in the park and try to follow in the footsteps of other baseball infielders like Tony Fernandez and Manny Alexander.

However, brilliant seasons in the Minors in 2013, unintentionally placed them in the same direction when their statistics were well analyzed and weighed upon by the operations team of the Leones del Escogido, a franchise that made them their first two picks In the Dominican League Draft of Rookies in that year.

1-2 in draft 2013

Polanco immediately opened the eyes of manager Moisés Alou, who without much analysis, made Pollanco the first choice of Leones in the draft and the third pick overall behind the Licey Tigers pick of (Adalberto Mondesí) and Gigantes choice of (Rossell Herrera).

In Erik's case, he came off of a .254 campaign with 32 doubles, a dozen triples and nine homers. Ramon Peña, who started as an Indian executive at the Latin American level was questioned by the Leones drafting team on the defensive game of the Rookie and the report far exceeded expectations. Gonzalez made it as the second Leones selection.

Solid performances by Gonzalez and Polanco, wrapped in a Leones jersey, made the Lions team the most electrifying combination of newcomers in the league since Erick Aybar and Anderson Hernandez made it to Licey in 2004- 05.

Since then, both players have maintained a close friendship and magnificent productions for the Lions. In their first campaign with the team, they were architects for this club's run to the final league championship series game , which they lost 5-3 to Licey. Gonzalez and Polanco were so meritorious that their performances enabled them to finish 1-2 in the race for the League's Rookie of the Year award . During the last campaign, Gonzalez and Polanco were instrumental when the Scarlet team took revenge on Licey by winning the crown. The championship was the fourth in last seven years for Escogido.

Arrived at the precise moment

In a League where "Thanksgiving" brings them ever closer to playoff qualification time, Erik and Polanco, in spite of their youth, are already consecrated as the two stalwarts for the Lions.

Joining the team for the second half run is a difficult task when the teams are battling "tooth and nail" in search of qualification.

"I'm here just for that purpose, helping the club as much as I can and I hope to do it big," said Erik, who this year, broke out by batting .296 (429-127) with 31 doubles, 11 home runs and 59 RBIs. Eric took his cup of coffee this campaign with the Indians.

With 25 years and very productive days in the Minors, Gonzalez, a tall player of 6'3" tall is entrusted with playing shortstop and second base, facts that will increase his chances of staying with the Cleveland Indians Which have one of the most talented double-play combinations in the game (Jason Kipnis and Francisco Lindor) and also received the good support from another Dominican, José Ramírez, who carried out a high-carat campaign. So far, Erik has the authorization from the Indians to go the whole distance with the Reds.

Polanco is two years younger, was signed in 2009, one year after his partner, but unlike Erik does not have retaining walls to break through to the big tent. In his case, Polanco recorded his third season with the Twins and ended up being the starting shorstop. He also played second base, third base, and DH.

RONNY RODRIGUEZ

Dominican Winter League

Ronny Rodriguez (2B, Aguilas Cibaenas): 2-4, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 BB. Rodriguez had probably the most impressive night among Tribe players in the Caribbean leagues on Tuesday hitting a double and a triple, scoring three of Aguilas' six runs and drawing a walk. The double and triple were his first in 10 games and his ninth and second, respectively, of the season overall as the Dominican infielder is now batting .338 with three homers and 12 RBI's in 35 games.

Abraham Almonte (DH, Toros del Este): 2-4, 1 RBI. It's looking like Almonte will play a large part in the Indians' outfield plans in 2017 and so far he is inspiring confidence with his winter ball play thus far batting .351 with four doubles and seven RBI's in 13 games while posting an impressive ratio of five walks versus three strikeouts. He also has two stolen bases in as many attempts.

Michael Martinez (2B, Estrellas Orientales): 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K. Martinez crushed his first home run of the winter ball campaign driving in one of only two runs for Estrellas as they would fall to Licey 6-2 on Tuesday. It's been a bit of a slow start for the veteran infielder this offseason batting just .188 in nine games, however four of his six hits have gone for extra bases.

Jordan Smith (RF, Toros del Este): 0-3, 1 K. Smith has gone hitless in his last three games as he is batting just .143 without an extra-base hit and only two RBI's in 10 games to start his winter ball season in the Dominican Republic. This could be attributed to a late start to his offseason campaign and he'll find his groove at the plate soon.

Erik Gonzalez (SS, Leones del Escogido): 0-4, 1 R, 1 K. Gonzalez snapped his brief hit streak at four games with an 0-for-4 night on Tuesday as Escogido fell to Aguilas and Gonzalez's teammate Ronny Rodriguez 6-3. Like Smith, Gonzalez has gotten off to a bit of delayed start in the winter leagues. He is faring a bit better, however, batting .273 with a homer and seven RBI's in 11 games.

Venezuelan Winter League

Giovanny Urshela (3B, Aguilas del Zulia): 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI. Urshela has now recorded a hit in eight of his last 10 games, including his last four consecutive as his impressive winter ball campaign continues. The 25-year-old is now batting .342 with three homers and 32 RBI's in 41 games. Additionally, Urshela has 16 doubles five walks and 16 strikeouts after batting .274 in 117 games for Columbus this season.

Jesus Aguilar (1B, Leones del Caracas): 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K. Aguilar has been on a hot streak of late for Caracas batting .306 in his last 10 games with a hit in nine of those contests. The Venezuelan native has put together a solid offseason up to this point batting .294 with six homers and 14 RBI's in 30 games. What's been most impressive has been his ability to get on base posting a .405 OBP after putting up only a .319 mark during the regular season.

Puerto Rican League

Alexis Pantoja (SS, Tiburones de Aguadilla): 1-4, 2 R, 1 SB. Pantoja ended a skid of four straight games without logging a hit as well as five games without scoring a run on Tuesday. He also stole his second base in a three-game span as well as his second of the offseason overall. So far, the young infielder has had mixed results in 18 games batting .261 with two doubles, two triples and three RBI's for Aguadilla, which is better than the .197 average he had posted in 57 games for Mahoning Valley.

Walking as well as homering is a good sign for his offense. And he won manager's award as best defensive 1B in the INternational League, but apparently Indians still don't think much of him
