Yandy Diaz: "We have the best lineup"

The Cuban slugger is enjoying his first experience with Lions LVBP

Yandy Diaz (Caracas Lions) arrived with the credentials of "Rookie of the Year" in triple A, an affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.

So far the Cuban baseball player has fulfilled the high expectations of the team. He entered the game yesterday hitting .414, producing 12 hits, two doubles, one triple, one home run and five RBIs in just five games. "Slowly I've been adapting to the league, initially, the swing was a little slow and long but as the games are passing I have been improving", said Diaz, while praising the team of Caracas.

"We have the best lineup in the league," said Diaz. "We still need to improve the pitching, defense and batting, but gradually things will go better," he said.

Yandy has also adapted to the pitchers of Venezuelan ball while enjoying the fans and Creole food. "Here I've seen pitchers that are difficult to decipher. In the United States you work a lot against the fastballs, here working against the fastballs but also the breaking pitches and harder", said Diaz.

"The fans are tough. They do not like mistakes but occasionally you make mistakes, I welcome the criticism," he added laughingly.

Diaz, is a natural infielder, but he comes to improve his skills in the outfield, recently playing games in center field. The manager Alfredo Pedrique said, "Before he had played in the left and right but I think it's not going bad in center where he has been gradually improving,"

THE EAGLES ARE FLYING

The game at Antonio Herrera Gutierrez stadium in the city of Barquisimeto did not intimidate the Eagles and managed to defeat the Cardinals 7 runs to 1. In this way the Eagles still remain solid in this first round of the season.

The Zulians went up on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning when Reynaldo Rodriguez connected for a solo homer to center field. In the third inning continued their offensive and increased the lead with two more runs. Giovanny Urshela's hit, a double to center field scored Bryant with the third run of the inning.

The Eagles would score two more times in the ninth on two straight hits by Giovany Urshela and Reynaldo Rodriguez to end the scoring. The winning pitcher was Kurt Heyer , the loss went to Jorge Martinez .

In this way the Eagles remain strong and in first place with a record of 17 wins 7 losses.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE (FALL STARS GAME)

Bradley Zimmer (East Fall Stars,CF) - 0-4, 1 K -

Zimmer was the only non-DH on the East squad to play the whole game at the same position Zimmer's slash line through 15 AFL games (not counting the Fall Stars Game) is .255/.406/.471 with 2 HR, 9 RBI and 7 SB in as many attempts. While the numbers may not be spectacular, remember that he's facing the toughest opposition he's ever faced in his career. There's also the issue of Bradley having played baseball since March. He, like almost everyone in the Fall League, is beginning to wear down a bit by this point.

VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE (LVBP)

Jesus Aguilar (Leones del Caracas, 1B) - 3-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI - The RBI Machine drove in his fourth run in three Venezuelan games this season. He is now batting .500 (7-for-14) with a .563 OBP and .786 slugging percentage rounding out his slash line.

Yandy Diaz (Leones del Caracas, LF) - 2-4, 1 R, 2 K - Diaz continued a strong winter league campaign in which he is now batting .405/.463/.622 in 9 games.

Giovanny Urshela (Aguilas del Zulia, 3B) - 3-5, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI - Gio now has three three-hit games in his last five and is hitting .385/.405/.590 with 6 extra-base hits and 7 RBI in his last 10 games.

Yonathan Mendoza (Cardenales de Lara, PH) - 0-1 - Mendoza has only started one game this season and has only seven plate appearances in eight games.

Toru Murata (Navegantes del Magallanes, SP) - ND, 3.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R (all earned), 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HR allowed, 1 BK - Murata, who avoided the individual loss only because the opposing starter (Tigres de Aragua lefty Alex Torres) was even worse (4 ER on 5 H and 3 BB in 1.1 IP), continues to alternate good and bad outings this winter ball season.

DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE (LIDOM)

Nellie Rodriguez (Leones de Escogido, PH) - 0-0, 1 BB - Nellie-Rod walked in the seventh inning as he continues to see little playing time.

Ronny Rodriguez (Aguilas Cibaenas, SS) - 1-4, 1 R, 1 K - The other Rodriguez from the Indians system playing in LIDOM is seeing plenty of playing time and extended his hitting streak to six games on Saturday night in a game that experienced a 77-minute rain delay in the bottom of the ninth.

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE (LBPRC)

Alexis Pantoja (Tiburones de Aguadilla, SS) - 0-3, 1 Sac Bunt - Pantoja has yet to get his first hit of the Puerto Rican season, but he has only had five at-bats so far.

MEXICAN PACIFIC LEAGUE (LMP)

Michael Choice (Charros de Jalisco, RF) - 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K,1 HBP - Despite the rough outing on Saturday night, Choice is having a solid Pacific League season, batting .280/.351/.460 with 2 HR and 10 RBI in 16 games entering last night.

Urshela and Rodriguez Lead the Eagles

Pitcher Kurt Heyer provided the pitching and Colombian Giovanny Urshela and Reynaldo Rodriguez supplied the offense for the Eagles of Zulia beating comfortably, 7 1, the Lara Cardinals.

Zulia, continued their winning ways again left with 10 games over .500 while the birds fell to a record at 13-12.

In his last appearance this season, Heyer said goodbye in the best possible way to the Zulia rotation. The American had a solid start of six innings, he allowed a single run, five hits and struck out three.

Heyer picked up his first win of the campaign and victory 17 for the Raptor team undisputed leader of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.

The offense was provided by Rodriguez and Urshela as they commanded the vicious attack for the Eagles.

The Colombian Urshela and Rodriguez hit consecutive home runs in the ninth to seal the final score in what was the tenth victory for Zulia as a visiting team. The home run by Rodriguez was his second of the game.

Top 9 performers from AFL Fall Stars Game

SURPRISE, Ariz. --

The Dodgers have one of the best farm systems in all of baseball, with six players on MLBPipeline.com's Top 100 Prospects list. Three of the top four on the Dodgers' Top 30 are hitters on the Top 100, and all are here in the Arizona Fall League.

Two of those bats were on the West roster at the Fall Stars Game on Saturday night, and they showed just what all the fuss was about. Cody Bellinger is the system's top prospect, No. 31 overall. He only had one base hit, but he made it count -- and in a left-on-left confrontation no less. The first baseman worked a 3-2 count against D-backs reliever Jared Miller, who has been lights out so far this fall. Then Miller hung a slider on the inner half of the plate. Bellinger brought his hands in beautifully and sent the ball out deep to right for a two-run shot. This should surprise no one, considering he hit 26 homers during the 2016 regular season.

Nor was it shocking to see what his organization-mate Willie Calhoun did. The system's No. 4 prospect had 27 home runs of his own with Double-A Tulsa this past season. Calhoun is the type of hitter who creates a different sound when he makes contact. It's consistent and loud, as it was in his first three at-bats.

Calhoun started with a line-drive single to center that was hit too hard to score the Royals' Ryan O'Hearn. He continued with a hard single to right field in the third inning off of a 95-mph fastball, the eighth pitch of that at-bat. That brought in two of the West's four runs in that frame.

Calhoun finished off his MVP performance in the fifth, when he turned on a Sam Bragg 93-mph fastball and crushed it out to right-center, a solo shot.

The Dodgers were far from the only prospects who stood out at the Fall Stars Game. Here are seven more prospects who represented themselves well:

Harrison Bader, OF and Carson Kelly, C, Cardinals

The Dodgers duo certainly stood out, but this pair of Cardinals also shone. Bader went 2-for-5, starting off the West's four-run second with a one-out double deep to left. It was Kelly who drove him in with a sharp single to center, and his sacrifice fly the next inning gave him his second RBI of the night.

Brent Honeywell, RHP, Rays

Drawing the start for the West, Honeywell was about as lights out as a pitcher can be, retiring all six batters he faced on just 31 pitches. Five of those outs were strikeouts. He struck out the side in the first, getting the A's Franklin Barreto on a screwball, then got the Brewers' Brett Phillips and Gleyber Torres of the Yankees with fastballs that topped 95 mph. Two more K's came in the second, one on another mid-90s fastball to the Indians' Bradley Zimmer and a screwball that got Blue Jays outfielder Anthony Alford.

Michael Kopech, RHP, Red Sox

Kopech came in in back of Honeywell and put up two perfect innings of his own, striking out three in the process. Known for his ability to hit triple digits consistently, he largely sat in the upper 90s, but was still extremely effective. More impressive is that 14 of Kopech's 20 pitches were for strikes, a continuation of a stretch in the AFL that has seen him command the ball better (one walk in 14 innings) than he has previously (career 4.6 BB/9 ratio).

Ryan McMahon, 1B, Rockies

Working to refine his approach and not swing at pitchers' pitches, McMahon did not have much to show for his efforts for the first couple of weeks here in Arizona. On Friday, though, he had a three-hit game and drove in the go-ahead run for Salt River in the 10th inning. The East had gone hitless through four before breaking through in the fifth. McMahon's long homer to right plated two runs and showcased the effortless power he is capable of when his swing is on time.

Jacob Nottingham, C, Brewers

It was Nottingham who got the East on the board ahead of McMahon's homer. After the Marlins' Brian Anderson picked up his team's first hit, Nottingham showed off his power with a double to left that scored Miami's third-base prospect. Nottingham has also worked very hard on his defensive craft and nearly threw out Tyler O'Neill trying to steal with a quick release time.

David Paulino, RHP, Astros

Paulino's organization-mate Francis Martes got knocked around in the fifth, giving up the extra-base hits to Nottingham and McMahon, but he came in and shut the door. After yielding a leadoff double to the Phillies' Scott Kingery, the tall right-hander got Cubs outfielder Eloy Jimenez to ground out to shortstop. Paulino went fastball-slider-fastball to freeze Torres and then threw an array of secondary stuff to strikeout the D-backs' Dawel Lugo to end the inning.

VENEZUELA WINTER LEAGUE

Yandy Diaz (CF - Leones del Caracas): 1-for-3. Diaz is getting some time in center field, which is interesting as he doesn't profile as one. But he is athletic and very versatile, so the Indians may be looking at this as an opportunity to see if he can handle some limited center field time and conceivably be able to handle any position on the diamond in a pinch except catcher. He's playing well so far in 10 games in Venezuela hitting .400 with 1 HR, 6 RBI and 1.055 OPS.

Jesus Aguilar (1B - Leones del Caracas): 1-for-2, R, HR, RBI, BB. Aguilar has had several big showings in winter ball the last few offseasons, and he looks to be on his way to another hitting .500 with 2 HR, 4 RBI and 1.538 in 5 games. He's out of options and will probably be DFAed at some point this offseason, but is still someone the Indians are hoping to have around as first base depth for next season.

Yhoxian Medina (PH/DH - Leones del Caracas): 2-for-2, R. Medina is one of those guys you just root for. He's small and doesn't have any standout too, but he is extremely versatile and has a great attitude which is why the Indians love him so much. He's had a solid winter ball campaign so far hitting .273 with a .697 OPS in 13 games.

Giovanny Urshela (3B - Aguilas del Zulia): 3-for-4. Urshela should get a lot of action this offseason to help make up for some of the lost time at Triple-A Columbus this season and also build some momentum to what is looking like a big 2017 season for him and the Indians. He had a so-so season with Columbus (.274 AVG, 8 HR, 57 RBI, .674 OPS) in 117 games, and with Jose Ramirez seemingly entrenched at third base in Cleveland for the foreseeable future, Urshela looks like just a depth option for next season - perhaps his final with the Indians considering he would be in his final option year.

Alex Monsalve (DH - Bravos de Margarita): 1-for-3, 2 R, BB. This was only Monsalve's second game of action in Venezuela as his first action was a pinch hitting appearance on Friday night (0-for-1). He's a minor league free agent and will be looking to showcase his abilities to a team looking for some upper level catching depth, and of course, is someone the Indians may resign.

Randy Valladares (RP - Bravos de Margarita): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K. This was Valladares fifth appearance in Venezuela (2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K) and he's done a solid job up to this point as matchup lefty. He's not a big prospect or someone who throws impressive stuff, but he is interesting as the Indians worked on a conversion to a big sidearm slot where he gets really low with his arm and body and almost drags his knuckles on the ground. There is a long way to go with his development and to get him consistent from outing to outing, but he's a project to keep an eye on.

DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE

Ronny Rodriguez (SS - Aguilas Cibaenas): 1-for-4, R, 2B, 3 K. Rodriguez has a modest 7-game hitting streak going and has swung a good bat so far in the DWL (9 G, .303 AVG, .960 OPS). An incredible 7 of his 10 hits have gone for extra bases so far (5 2B, 2 HR), though he also has a poor 10:1 strikeout to walk ratio in 33 at bats. The intriguing power but disappointing discipline is something we have seen a lot over his entire career in the Indians farm system, so it doesn't look like he is going to change - you just hope he hits enough to cover up those discipline issues.

MEXICO WINTER LEAGUE

Michael Choice (RF - Charros de Jalisco): 0-for-2, RBI. Choice is a minor league free agent and at this point the expectation is he will sign elsewhere - though there is always a chance he could return to the Indians next season if the Indians feel they could use the outfield depth at Triple-A and he believes they are the right fit for him. He's hoping a strong winter season opens the doors for more offers from other teams, and so far in 18 games in Mexico he is hitting .259 with 2 HR, 11 RBI and .770 OPS.

Ronny Rodriguez was elected Monday as the Star Baseball Player of the Week by the Producciones Dominicana Apolo, the official jury of the League of Professional Baseball in the Dominican Republic (lidom).

Rodriguez, shortstop of the Cibao Eagles, won the award for the week between October 31 and November 6, the third week of fall-winter season.

Rodriguez won the award overwhelmingly by getting 46 votes from the jury, more than 4 times the support received by his nearest competitor, Rymer Liriano (Licey), who obtained 10 votes. Daniel Palka (Escogido) received 8; Alexander Valdez (Escogido), 6; Ruben Sosa (Escogido), 6, and Francisley Bueno (Aguilas Cibaenos), 4.

In six games, Rodriguez batted .375 connecting for nine hits in 24 trips to the plate, two homers and four doubles. In addition, he drove in six runs, scored five, his slugging percentage was .792 and .400 OBP. It is the first time in his young career that Rodriguez achieved this recognition given out by the league.

The jury, composed of journalists covering the season, evaluated 15 position players and 12 pitchers and provided their votes through the Internet.

Andrés van der Horst, president of Apollo, said Rodriguez will be awarded on Saturday November 12 at 2:30 PM prior to the game between the Cibao Eagles and Lions of Escogido, in Quisqueya Stadium.

Jose Ramirez wants to play in the Classic;

Does not rule out playing for the Toros

By David Venn / LasMayores.com.-

CLEVELAND -

Despite playing in 2016 his first full season at the major league level and was extended to November thanks to the successes of the Indians and their pursuit of a World Series title - Jose Ramirez does not rule wearing the uniform of the Toros del Este this winter.

On Monday, while the tribe was preparing at Progressive Field for Game 6 of the Fall Classic, the Dominican stated that in case he was summoned to play for the national team in the World Baseball Classic 2017, he would like to participate in some games with his team from La Romana.

"If I am invited to the Classic, I automatically will be asking for permission from Cleveland to play with the Toros," Ramirez said, who has played 100 games for the Toros in the Dominican League since 2012. "It is also good for me to keep playing he said. You know that these games help every one. "

Ramirez, an integral part of the Cleveland team that will seek to beat the Cubs on Tuesday in Game 6 and to be crowned champions, confirmed his desire to represent the Dominican Republic in the 2017 Classic to be held next March. The 24 year old also revealed that he has not had contact in this regard with the general manager of the Dominican Republic National Team, Moises Alou.

Ronnie Rodriguez won the Player of the Week award this past week, turning it up a notch this week. The Aguilas Cibaenos have 3 runs on 3 hits tonight. The game is in the 7th inning and so far Rodriquez has 2 of the 3 hits, 1 double, and 1 homer. The double was his 6th, the homer was his 3rd. This is the third week of the winter season for Rodriguez. This is the best start by Indian representatives in a looooong time.

DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE

Ronny Rodriguez (1B, Aguilas Cibaenas): 2-3, R, 2B, HR, RBI, SO. Rodriguez continues to swing a hot bat in Dominican League action, collecting a pair of extra base hits. The knocks extended Rodriguez’s current hitting streak to eight games, and his home run is his third of the fall. Rodriguez has not only been getting lots of hits lately, but they have been coming at the perfect time. He is now batting .417 with runners on compared to just .238 with the bases empty.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE

Greg Allen (RF, Mesa Solar Sox): 2-4, R, SO, SB. After going hitless in his last three games, Allen got back on track by collecting a pair of singles Monday. As we have seen so many times from him, he was able to get on with a single then extend it 90 feet by stealing second base. The stolen bag was his 8th of the fall to go along with 45 steals during the regular season. Allen has also mashed left-handed pitching in Arizona as he is now batting .400 off south paws in contrast to .243 off right-handers.

Cameron Hill (RP, Mesa Solar Sox): 2 IP, H, 0 ER, BB, 4 SO. Hill was the first out of the ‘pen for Mesa on Monday, and was their only reliever to go multiple innings. Hill looked sharp throwing 20 of his 31 pitches for strikes and compiled four strikeouts in the process. This was a nice bounce back game for Hill, who had allowed five earned runs in his last two outings. However, Hill has now allowed a walk in six of his seven appearances in Arizona. It will be key for him to limit the free passes going forward.

Trevor Frank (RP, Mesa Solar Sox): 1 IP, 0 ER, SO, HD. Frank breezed through an inning of work with relative ease on Monday picking up a hold for Mesa. After allowing three runs in his first game in Arizona, Frank has allowed only one run in six appearances since then. Frank spent all of the regular season in Lynchburg this past year. He compiled 17 saves and went 1-1 with an ERA of 2.47 for the Hillcats in 44 games out of the bullpen.

Rodriguez picked a good time to get his first stolen base. With the game tied at 7 in the bottom of the 5th, Rodriquez singled to lead off the home half of the inning, stole second, advanced to 3rd on a pick off attempt, and scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch. End of 5 the Aguilas leads the Gigantes 8-7. Ronnie Rodriguez is having another nice outing. If he keeps this up, he'll be staring at the second Player of the Week award for the second week in a row.

No change in the scoring. Inning 7. Rodriguez with another lead off hit but gets stranded at second. Score 8=7.

Gigantes tied the game in the 8th.

Bottom of the 9th. Lead off walk followed by Ronnie Rodriques' 4th hit of the game followed by a walk to load the bases with no one out, followed by a hit batter. Aguilas a winner 9-8. Old friend Josh Judy gets the win and remains unscored upong

Francisco Mejia Estrellas not getting much playing time to this point, (.286), 4 games, 7 AB, 2 H, 2 K

Arizona Fall League

David Speer (RP, Mesa Solar Sox): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 0 K. Since his six-run blowup back on October 22nd, Speer has allowed only one run in his last four games (6.1 innings) with six hits, zero walks and four strikeouts. While he only pitched a third of an inning, he ended the fourth inning and snuffed a potential rally by Surprise before it got out of hand as Mesa went onto win their league-leading 13th game.

Bradley Zimmer (CF, Mesa Solar Sox): 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K. Despite not recording a hit on Tuesday, Zimmer drew a walk and scored a run marking the ninth time in his last 10 games that he has scored a run as the top Tribe prospect has now scored 18 runs in 16 games thus far in the AFL campaign. His three strikeouts, however, marked the third game in his last six where he has fanned three times as he has posted a 9-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in that span after putting up an 8-7 split in his first six games.

Dominican Winter League

Ronny Rodriguez (3B, Aguilas Cibaenas): 4-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 SB. The top stat line from Tuesday night's winter league action for Tribe players came courtesy of infielder Ronny Rodriguez, who turned in a perfect 4-for-4 performance with a double, an RBI and a run scored as Aguilas celebrated a walk-off win over Gigantes. Over his last 10 games, Rodriguez is batting .432 with three homers, eight doubles and nine RBI's.

Francisco Mejia (C, Estrellas Orientales): 1-1. Mejia was a late defensive sub for Estrellas on Tuesday, but that didn't stop him from hitting as recorded a knock in his only plate appearance giving him three in eight at-bats so far. The Indians' top catching prospect has only gotten a few starts in winter ball so far after putting together a historic season between Lake County and Lynchburg this year. His name could be one to watch on the rumor mill this offseason, however, after he was included in the ill-fated Jonathan Lucroy deal at the deadline.

Venezuela Winter League

Yandy Diaz (CF, Leones del Caracas): 2-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI. Diaz's knack for hitting and consistency continues to be just as evident in winter ball as he has recorded a hit every game played so far with seven of those being multi-hit efforts, including Tuesday's performance. The Cuban native is now batting .419 for Caracas a homer, five doubles, a triple and eight RBI's in 11 contests. Diaz also got the start in center field and played errorless baseball as his versatility continues to be explored.

Jesus Aguilar (1B, Leones del Caracas): 0-2, 1 BB. Even though he is just getting his winter ball campaign started, Aguilar is already finding a groove as he is not only batting .444 (8-for-18) in six games, but also displaying patience at the plate with four walks versus just one strikeout in that span. The Indians' slugger prospect also has two home runs and four RBI's for Caracas.

Yhoxian Medina (3B, Leones del Caracas): 1-1. Medina has only gotten a handful of at-bats in his time in Venezuela so far this offseason, but he has taken advantage of them going 7-for-23 (.304) over the span of 14 games as he's been relegated to mostly late-game substitution duties, as was the case on Tuesday where he subbed in for Caracas third baseman Henry Alejandro Rodriguez and recorded a hit in his only at-bat.

Giovanny Urshela (3B, Aguilas del Zulia): 0-4. Urshela snapped a string of three straight games where he had recorded three hits and a four-game hit streak overall as he went 0-for-4 on Tuesday. In his last 10 games, Urshela is batting .400 with a homer and seven RBI's. What's most encouraging is while he only has two walks in 15 games, he also has only four strikeouts.
“Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday's success or put its failures behind and start over again. That's the way life is, with a new game every day, and that's the way baseball is.”
