I think so, ken. You can change that in your preferences, I believe.

What I'm looking for is the way to have as little vertical space wasted as possible. I chose a new skin / scheme / whatever (prosilver or some such) and it's a bit better (and I turned off user icons) but I'd really like to squeeze it as much as possible. Any suggestions?

Or should someone maybe open up a new thread devoted to discussion of how to best use this new forum/site?

But if you change the ascending/descending order, you shouldn't have to scroll as much.
