Snuck this one in under the wire:

Elliot (Youngstown OH): So I just read that Aiken has signed. Should Indians expect him to be ready for spring training, or more like mid-season?

J.J. Cooper: Midseason as more and more teams are adopting a 15-month regimen rather than 11-12 for the recovery. Great news for the Indians. That came together quicker than I expected.

Good info, thanks Civ.

Now that Rusty will read you are from Youngstown he will adopt you as a BFF.

Honestly, I was worried about McKenzie as soon as we took him and I read he was a Vandy commit. That program has something special going on. They won the national title last year. They are playing TCU on ESPN tonight in the college world series again for this year. That coaching staff is doing a great job, and making those kids better.

Was just afraid that would make it even harder to pry a kid away from his commit.

Lindor could be an Omar quality SS although not a big bat. Zimmer could be a good solid RF. But Aiken projects as even more and he's certainly the best pitcher since CC. Pomeranz projected well but not like Aiken; and then there were all those real average college lefties like Huff and Sowers.

That completes the top 10 rounds, I think. I usually rely on BA for the status but they're way behind, don't show Hillman or Wyatt let alone McKenzie. I'd like to know what bonuses have been paid; it seems they may have had enough under-slot signings to leave some money available to "overpay" for some of the lower round harder-to-get picks. That's where Cody Anderson came from in 2011.

Re: Draft Folder

There was no terms released on the Aiken deal. I think they wanted to protect the kid a little bit and not have a ton of stories out there about how much money he lost. (Astros were going to sign him for 6.5 mill I think)

I have yet to see any figures on McKenzie either. But I did read that they had a good chunk of change left over after all the other signings and they were going to put that towards getting McKenzie signed. The figure I read was 720 K left over to add to his slotted money. Not sure how that writer came up with that figure though since Aiken's deal was never announced.

CIV !

(sorry to yell thru the keyboard, but didn't want to go to trouble of typing this to have you miss it... LOL)

I wonder who in the later rounds they're going to use this for?

One guy might be Nick Madrigal. He was our 17th round pick. A small middle infielder that the Indians supposedly really liked. Don't ask me why. They seem to have an affinity for small middle infielders with no power. But anyway, I did read they liked him and would end up going a little over slot to sign him. And last I remember seeing we hadn't signed him yet.

By the way, not listed in the article above are two players we drafted after the Bonus Pool rounds, that we have signed and probably had to go over slot to get them signed.

One was 19th round pick, Todd Isaacs. He is a speed burner. Matter of fact, he has been timed in the 60 faster than Billy Hamilton. It is suspected the Tribe had to go just a tad over slot to get it done. Just like 100 K.

The other is Daniel Sprinkle. He had committed to Auburn to play both baseball (6'4" RH pitcher) and football (tight end). It was originally thought that he was unsignable, but we got him signed. Figures have not been released but it is thought the Indians had to really step up to get him signed.
