Zebulon, N.C. – Despite early home runs by both teams on Thursday night, the Carolina Mudcats took the four-game series over the Potomac Nationals with a 4-1 win.

In the first inning, Nationals center fielder Michael Taylor worked the count to full before he hit a home run over the left-center field wall and pushed the score to 1-0. Mudcats centerfielder Tyler Naquin countered the early Nationals home run with a homer over the scoreboard and evened up the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.

Following up his home run from the first inning, Naquin picked up a ground-rule double after his fly ball down the left field line fell fair and bounced into the stands. He scored from second on the next pitch after shortstop Francisco Lindor singled in to right field, giving the Mudcats a 2-1 advantage.

A pitchout caught Lindor stealing second for the first out of the inning. After right fielder Jordan Smith got his second single of the game, he was thrown out trying to get to second to end the inning, but not after the Mudcats take the 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, third baseman Justin Toole singled to second for his second hit of the game. Zack MacPhee grounded out, but only after he advanced Toole to second base. Lindor continued his hitting streak with a two-out double to left that scored the runner from second and brought the score to 3-1. First baseman Jerrud Sabourin kept the fifth inning going with a single to right and Lindor was waved around and pushed the score to 4-1 Mudcats.

The Nationals threatened in the top of the eighth with runners on first and second base with no outs. Leftfielder Billy Burns hit in to a double play and was punched out by Lindor. Taylor followed up the double play with a fly out to second base to end the inning and threat by the Nationals.

Leading off the ninth inning for the Potomac Nationals, third baseman Cutter Dykstra dribbled a slow roller up the third base line. It was cleanly fielded and thrown over to first by Toole and the out was picked up by Sabourin as he tagged out Dykstra before he crossed the base.

The Nationals began to put together a little rally in the top of the ninth after Nationals shortstop Jacob Martinson singled into left-center field, followed by a single to right by catcher Adrian Nieto. With runners on first and second and one out, first baseman Kevin Keyes advanced the runners into scoring position with a ground out to third base. With two outs and the tying run at the plate, right-handed pitcher Jeff Johnson ended the game with a swinging strikeout as the Mudcats took the four-game series over the Nationals with a 4-1 victory.

Will Roberts picked up the win for the Mudcats after pitching seven innings, allowing only four hits, no walks, and striking out six. After the game Manager David Wallace spoke on taking the series at home after struggling on the road.

“It feels great that we went out there, kept our bats going and put together a game like we know we are capable of playing," Wallace said. "Roberts really came out and put together seven strong innings to pick up the win tonight and the RBI’s by Lindor early in the game really contributed to the win offensively.”

The Mudcats hit the road for two back-to-back series starting Friday at Frederick and follow that up by facing Potomac again starting on Monday. They will return home to Five County Stadium on May 3rd to face the Frederick Keys.

Carlos Carrsaco with 4 shutout innings so far. He's not been scored on in his 3 AAA starts.
Mitch Brown struggles through 4 innings, 3 runs, 4 walks, 3 wild pitches, ERA drops below 10
Aeros have the night off.
Why the continual ripping of Naquin ? Because Baseball America's nerds thought he should be drafted 10 spots lower ? Seems like a great reason.

Well, I couldn't stand it any longer. I shelled out the 40 bucks for MILB.TV. It's a nice supplement/alternative to the Indians. I subscribed a week ago mainly to watch Ramirez, Naquin, and Lindor. I haven't been disappointed so far. Bryson Myles is an interesting player. Ramirez and Lindor have made some highlight reel stuff. I hope they move Naquin and Lindor to Akron. I'm really anxious to watch Lindor and Ramirez playing up the middle. Ramirez has played two straight games at shortstop and three games overall. Something to keep an eye on I suppose.

Carrasco sidelined with elbow contusion, House promoted

Carlos Carrasco

The Cleveland Indians announced Friday morning that Triple-A Columbus right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco suffered a deep contusion to his right elbow and forearm after being hit with a line drive on Thursday night. He is listed as day to day.

Carrasco was in the midst of another very good outing for Columbus as he had thrown 4.2 shutout innings before the incident occurred, and in total has thrown 14.2 shutout innings in three appearances. While he is listed as day to day, he will probably miss some time in order to let the swelling go down and to ensure there is nothing else wrong. If he is out a few weeks and not throwing, it will probably also mean that he will need to do some sort of throwing program to get back into game shape. In any case, the Indians dodged a major bullet with this incident as the scene described by those in attendance was pretty scary.

With Columbus in need of a starter, the Indians gave a well deserved promotion to Double-A Akron left-hander T.J. House and sent him to Columbus. In four starts with Akron, he went 2-1 with a 3.22 ERA, and in 22.1 innings allowed 20 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks, and had 27 strikeouts.

I guess I tend to expect the worst from Tribe first round picks based on past performance which doesn't of course predict success of future choices. My concern with Naquin is if he brings enough offensive skills to be a major league regular, which is what a upper 1st rounder should be. He will need a combination of speed, power and on-base skills to complement his line drive hitting. We'll see.

Danny Salazar is looking better all the time. He combined with Austin Adams and Bryce Stowell to pitch a 5 hit shutout and among the 3 of them, fanning 16. 9K by Salazar in 3 innings vs 1 walk and 3 hits; Adams 4 K, 2 hits; Stowell 3 K, one walk.

Offense from: Ramirez 2 hits and his 9th steal; Ronnie Rodriguez 2 hits and his 2nd steal; 2 hits and 2 walks by Chen (356 avg, OPS 1077), 2 hits and a walk Jesus Aguillar (288, OPS only 730)

AKron and Carolina in action this afternoon. Lindor with hits his 3 first times up to bat, caught stealing once. Bo Greenwell season and AA debut. Matt Packer with a busy 4 1/3 innings: 10 hits, 1 Hit batter, 3 walks, escapes allowing only 4 runs. In Carolina, top starter Cody Anderson in 4 innings has surrendered a pair of runs; his ERA 2.08 at the moment. Recently released Delvi Cid in the opposing lineup today.

What I hope doesn't turn out to have been a career day for Levon Washington yesterday. 5 for 5, one a double, 3 runs scored, 2 driven in. For the season he'd only been to the plate 10 times previously with a double and three walks to show for it. If he can stay healthy.....

Meanwhile his teammates got outhit 18-10 and outscored 13-7. Dorsyss Paulino with 2 errors gives him 8 already. He's having a lousy April. His OPS is 529.

Dylan Baker was fairish 5 innings, 4 runs on 5 hits, 3 walks, 7 strikeouts.
Felix Sterling was awfulish 1 inning, 5 runs on 6 hits, 1 walk and 1 k. He was a prospect a couple years ago but has now become a reliever who can't get out of Low A.
Elvis Araujo has not been pitching anywhere. He and Sterling were the hot young arms as of 2011.

Paulino was pushed to a full season league at age 18 so his slow start is not startling but it is disappointing. In 2012 he was given a couple weeks in Mahoning Valley against college players at age 17 and held his own. His power has vanished so far in the Midwest League.

2012 in Arizona League 187 total AB 14 doubles 6 triples 6 homers
ditto in NYPL 62 total AB 5 doubles and 1 homer
2013 in Midwest League 73 total AB no extra base hits.

He is not striking out too much more, 14 times, and he has been patient enough to draw 7 walks.

8 errors in 18 games; Lindor has SS for the future; Paulino will wind up somewhere else if he continues to move up.

Jesus Aguilllar with his 2nd homerun and 24th and 25th RBI. He leads the Eastern League.
Jose Ramirez with his 1st homer, and 2 steals, for 11, and that leads the Eastern League.
Chun Chen with a single, a double and a walk. He leads the EL in on base pct and OBP.
Carlos Moncrief adds his 2nd homer, Quincy Latimore his 3rd.
Bryce Stowell runs his scoreless (at least earned run) streak to 8; he has fanned 15 in those 8 innings.
