Rangers 7, Indians 6
March 10, 2013

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Craig Gentry knows he is not a power hitter. Still, he's shown he can handle good pitches to hit.

Gentry hit a two-run homer off Brett Myers to pace the Texas Rangers to a 7-6 win over the Cleveland Indians.

Gentry added a single and scored another run. Jeff Baker, a non-roster invitee for Texas, hit an RBI double and single in his first two at-bats, making it eight straight plate appearances in which he'd reached base.

"Gentry is getting through the baseball," manager Ron Washington said. "When he gets a pitch he can drive he's doing it."

Myers, who pitched 70 times in relief last season, threw three scoreless innings before the Rangers got to him in the fourth for five runs. Myers will be the Indians' No. 3 starter this season. He threw 70 pitches.

"My arm got a little fatigued," Myers said. "I haven't thrown 70 pitches in a while. My stuff wasn't as crisp in that last inning. I tried to make an adjustment to hit my spots better but they got their bats on the ball."

Cleveland manager Terry Francona was pleased with Myers' outing for the first three innings.

"He got two outs in the fourth and then got his breaking ball up," Francona said. "He got a little tired. Before that I thought before that his tempo was good. He was throwing his breaking ball for strikes I thought it was really a positive."

Robbie Ross, one of seven pitchers competing for a place in the Texas rotation, allowed two runs in 2 2-3 innings. He was not pleased with his command of the strike zone, walking three batters.

"Ross walked too many people," Washington said. "He wasn't happy. He wasn't able to back door his cutter like he usually does."

Carlos Carrasco pitched four innings for Cleveland, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. Carrasco is in competition with Scott Kazmir and Daisuke Matsuzaka for the fifth spot in the Indians rotation.

Drew Stubbs, who came to the Indians in a trade for Shin-Soo Choo, had two hits, including an RBI triple.

Michael Brantley, who had stitches removed from his forearm on Saturday, was 0 for 2 for Cleveland. He had missed 12 games with a cut sustained in a slide against the Angels.

NOTES: Rangers LHP Matt Harrison threw a bullpen session and reported much improvement with a troublesome toe on his left foot. He will not be making a trip back to Texas for an exam, which had been a possibility. The date of his next start is still to be determined. ... Texas 1B Mitch Moreland missed his second straight day with a tight right quadriceps. ... RHP Joakim Soria (Tommy John) and RHP Colby Lewis (surgery for torn flexor tendon) were scheduled to throw bullpens for Texas on Sunday... Indians INF Mark Reynolds is out with a strained oblique. "It is just spring training soreness," he said. ... Cleveland RHP Chris Perez, who was out with a right shoulder strain, began a throwing program Sunday. "I felt OK. There's not much you can do from 60 feet."

I think Kazmir is almost a cinch to win the spot.

Kluber has not pitched well.
I'd like to see Carrasco starting again soon, but he needs some more rehab work.
I'd love to see Bauer in the rotation, but a bit more AAA time cannot hurt
DiceK has gotten men out, but wouldn't want to rely on him throw 80 mph
And Kazmir has been terrific, is a lefty, and if he flops we have a couple guys in AAA who will be ready to step in.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Myers back in the pen later in the summer when Carrasco and Bauer are both ready for Cleveland.

I think Carrasco has the stuff to be a No. 2 or 3 to Bauer's No. 1. Masterson joins them at the top of the rotation. Could be a decent starting unit in 2014 and with my rose-tinted glasses on for the second half and stretch run in 2013, too.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The Angels released left-hander Scott Kazmir two seasons ago. On Monday afternoon, they got to see how much progress the pitcher has made in his comeback attempt with the Indians in a scoreless tie at Goodyear Ballpark.

Kamir matched Jered Weaver's four shutout innings, continuing his push for the fifth spot in Cleveland's starting rotation.

"He attacked the zone," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "They had a good lineup today, so it was a good test for him. I thought he did really well."

Kazmir, who is in camp with the Tribe as a non-roster invitee, was released by the Angels in June 2011. The lefty said that fact did not provide any extra motivation on Monday.

"No," Kazmir said. "It was just fun seeing those guys before the game and having a chance to talk to them. Besides that, I was just locked in getting whatever I had to do done."

Cleveland has thrown Kazmir -- along with Carlos Carrasco, Trevor Bauer, Corey Kluber and Daisuke Matsuzaka -- into the mix for its lone rotation vacancy. The lefty has answered the call so far, turning in 11 shutout innings between Cactus League contests and one Minor League "B" game appearance.

Overall this spring, Kazmir has scattered eight hits with 13 strikeouts and two walks.

Against the Angels, Kazmir allowed no runs on three hits with four strikeouts and one free pass. He allowed a leadoff single to Mark Trumbo in the second inning, but then induced a double-play groundout off the bat of Howard Kendrick and followed that with a strikeout of Vernon Wells. Los Angeles had three baserunners between the third and fourth innings, but it was unable to score off the lefty.

"Everything went well," Kazmir said. "I felt pretty good out there. I wasn't as sharp as I wanted to be, but at the same time, I was throwing strikes. That's all you can ask for at this time. It went well."

Weaver -- third in the balloting for the American League Cy Young Award last season -- held Cleveland to no runs on three hits in his four innings for the Angels. The right-hander mixed in six strikeouts and allowed two walks in his outing.

"I didn't want to keep getting banged around," Weaver said, "so I wanted to mix in some offspeed pitches and was able to keep them off-balance. It's coming along. Arm slot and mechanics are becoming more consistent, like you would expect in your third, fourth and fifth start."

Matsuzaka -- also a non-roster invitee this spring for the Indians -- worked a scoreless sixth inning, but left the game with calf cramps after throwing a few warmup pitches before the seventh. The right-hander has allowed two runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk in eight innings in Cactus League play for Cleveland this spring.

Up next for Indians: Following Tuesday's scheduled off-day, Cleveland will head to Glendale, Ariz., on Wednesday for a 4:05 p.m. ET Cactus League clash with the White Sox. Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez, who projects as the Tribe's No. 2 starter, is slated to work five frames against the Indians' American League Central rivals. Setup man Joe Smith, and bullpen hopefuls Cody Allen and Bryan Shaw, are also scheduled to pitch for Cleveland. A live webcast of the game will be available on indians.com.

Scott Kazmir throws 4 scoreless innings as Cleveland Indians and Angels play to scoreless tie

By Paul Hoynes, The Plain Dealer

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Scott Kazmir continued his impressive spring Monday as he pitched four scoreless innings against the Angels at Goodyear Ballpark. Kazmir struck out four, walked one and allowed three hits as the Indians Angels played to a scoreless nine-inning tie.

Kazmir has not pitched in the big leagues since 2011 when the Angels released him. The left-hander has not allowed a run in eight innings in Cactus League play and is emerging as the leading candidate to win the fifth spot in the Indians' rotation.

Daisuke Matsuzaka, competing with Kazmir for the fifth spot, pitched a scoreless sixth but left the game in the top of the seventh with cramping in his right calf. Matt Langwell relieved.

The injury does not bode well for Matsuzaka making the team.

Jered Weaver started for the Angels and pitched four scoreless innings. Michael Bourn and Michael Brantley singled to start the first, but Weaver retired the next three batters to end the threat.

Bourn opened the third with a double to left, but Weaver stranded him by getting the next three outs.

The Indians left the bases loaded in the eighth.

In the ninth, Tyler Holt singled and reached third on a single by Cedric Hunter. Holt was tagged out in a rundown between home and third on Ryan Raburn's grounder to third. Cord Phelps grounded out to second to end the game.

Indians 5, White Sox 2
March 13, 2013

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - While the White Sox avoid using their starting pitchers against American League Central opponents, the Indians figure they've seen their rivals so often a few spring training games won't hurt.

So at the same time Jake Peavy was throwing 81 pitches on a back field against minor leaguers, Ubaldo Jimenez worked five solid innings against Chicago in a 5-2 victory Wednesday.

"I felt good," Jimenez said. "I was able to go out there and throw all my breaking balls and fastball for a strike. In the first two or three innings, I was able to command the fastball in and away. I felt good."

After stringing together four hits in the second, including an RBI ground-rule double to center by Gordon Beckham and a run-scoring single by Dewayne Wise, the White Sox were held to two hits in the final six innings against Jimenez and four Indians relievers.

Jimenez knew the White Sox were sitting on his fastball during the second, so he went to some breaking pitches to stop the damage. He allowed seven hits before going to the bullpen for 10 more pitches. Jimenez did not walk a batter and struck out three. He is penciled in to be the Indians' No. 2 starter after Justin Masterson.

"He was pretty good," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "He didn't really throw his off-speed pitches for strikes, but he only gave up the two (runs), and they got four hits in a row. It wasn't like he was walking people. I thought it was, for the most part, really encouraging. I think it proves to him, hopefully, that he can live with that fastball."

Much has been made of Jimenez's velocity drop on his fastball, but Francona said it's not an issue with him.

"I don't think that's something we ever care to talk about," Francona said. "He fell into that rut last year where he was reaching back trying to get more. With his movement, if he just stays on target, he's fine."

Infielder Cord Phelps hit a two-run homer against Chicago prospect Deunte Heath in the seventh inning to extend a 3-2 lead.

Lonnie Chisenhall and Asdrubal Cabrera each doubled for the Indians, giving Cleveland a major league-leading 46 doubles this spring.

Alexei Ramirez (.409) singled twice and stole a base, and Wise had two singles for the White Sox.

NOTES: Indians right-handed reliever Frank Hermann will miss the season after having Tommy John surgery on Wednesday in New York. Hermann, 28, has pitched in 95 games for Cleveland over the past three seasons, including 15 last season when he posted a 2.33 ERA. He was competing for a spot in the bullpen but hadn't pitched since Feb. 25. . White Sox third baseman Jeff Keppinger's sore shoulder, which has lingered since the beginning of camp, kept him out of the lineup again but manager Robin Ventura downplayed it, saying the team is being overly cautious. Keppinger might play second when he returns, perhaps this weekend, to avoid longer throws. . Right-handed reliever Jesse Crain (groin) threw a bullpen session and is getting close to game action, Ventura said. . Zach McAllister, the Indians No. 4 starter, pitches against the Royals in Goodyear on Wednesday. . White Sox lefty John Danks continues his recovery from August shoulder surgery when he starts against the Angels in Tempe.

Beat me to it Civ. I was going to post that I hope Francona didn't pull the trigger too quick on McCallister. Trevor Bauer has been a much better pitcher this spring. I had Bauer rated higher than McCallister and slotted for the starting rotation breaking out of camp. Too late now I guess.

Once again, acting like we are in a dream world and not a real business world. Does McCallister have any options left ?

Bauer was never times a thousand ever going to make the opening day roster.

Just another Joe dream. Similar to thinking that people care about the winter leagues and the WBC.

Never going to happen.
