Olmo and Segura DPL – POWER SHOWCASE MVP’s

Posted November 27th, 2012 by DPL & filed under DPL News, Featured Post.

During the DPL – POWER SHOWCASE Tournament there were many bright spots and more than 10 players signed. Dayan Olmo-MIF and Paterson Segura-RHP took MVP honors as both players placed some impressive numbers during the tournament and All-Star Game.
Image
Dayan Olmo

Dayan Olmo-MIF trained by Valentin Monero in Malena-Boca-Chica D.R.; the switch hitter is a July 2nd eligible player with plus speed and solid hitting ability. During the DPL POWER SHOWCASE All-Star Game he went 3/4 with 2 triples and 3 RBI getting him MVP honors. Dayan projects to be a top selection in 2013, he has versatility to play the outfield and middle infield but his hitting ability and speed should carry him to professional baseball.
Image
Paterson Segura

Paterson Segura-RHP trained by Yovanny “Sabino” Ubiera in San Pedro de Macoris. Segura has arm strength and a feel for a Curveball and Change-up and pitch-ability. He’s a short arm’er with deception in delivery from a H 3/4 arm slot; his velocity ranges from 88-91mph (92mph). He took MVP honors with 4 strike outs in 2 Inns, 0-H and 0-ER.

According to a major league source, the Red Sox traded first baseman Lars Anderson to the Indians in exchange for Double-A starter Steven Wright.
Image

Lars Anderson, once rated as the top prospect in the Red Sox farm system, was hitting .259 with a .359 OBP, .415 slugging mark and .774 OPS with nine homers in Triple-A Pawtucket this year, similar numbers to the .265/.369/.422/.791 line he posted a year ago at the same level. The 24-year-old nearly had been traded to the Athletics in a deal for pitcher Rich Harden at the 2011 deadline, only to have the deal nixed by Sox concerns about Harden's medicals.

Scouting Report

Tall left-handed hitter with well, filled out frame. Smooth swing. Demonstrates strong patience at the plate, comfortably working counts to get offerings to drive. Brings a plan to the plate and has knowledge of his strike zone. Lets the ball get deep on him and hits inside of the baseball. Extends well with his arms to drive ball to opposite field. Struggles with breaking balls, which leads to swings-and-misses and weak contact on the ground. Must improve contact skills to project as an average-to-better hitter for batting average at the big league level. Despite plus raw power, has trouble pulling the ball with lift. Swing shows too much hook and lacks leverage due to looping hands during swing load. Struggles to get good wood on inside fastballs. Average-to-solid-average home run projection at big league level. Below-average speed. Defense around the first base bag has improved the last two seasons. Has become more sure-handed. Digs throws in the dirt well. Average range. Adequate defensively. Ability to stick on a major league roster heavily tied into offensive production. Needs more consistency with focus and concentration. Projects as an up-and-down major leaguer, with potential to carve role out on a second division team.
Image

In exchange for Anderson, the Sox received 27-year-old right-hander Wright, a knuckleball pitcher who was having a tremendous year in Double-A Akron. In 20 starts, he is 9-6 with a 2.70 ERA, 101 strikeouts and 62 walks in 115 2/3 innings. Opponents are hitting .207 against him, the lowest batting average against in the Eastern League. He is not on the 40-man roster, so the Red Sox have freed a pair of 40-man spots in dealing Anderson, Matt Albers and Scott Podsednik for Craig Breslow (from the Diamondbacks) and Wright.

I wasn't very happy with this deal. Hope this one doesn't come back to bite us in the ass. Last winter, Steven Wright broke out in the Panama Winter League along with Toru Murata and Danny Salazar. Steven Wright followed up his winter league performance with a strong summer performance only to get traded while Lars Anderson has been on a down hill spiral. Wright has continued his uphill spiral ever since winter of last season. He's having another strong winter season. Could Wright crack the Boston rotation in 2013?

Anderson projects as an up-and-down major leaguer, with potential to carve role out on a second division team.

Well! Anderson is headed to the right place!

What are these guys thinking???

Jose Ramirez reminds me of a switch hitting Kenny Lofton without as much power. Of course, Ramirez just turned 20 in September. Perhaps he can fill out that lanky body and develop more power. His glove is major league ready. If Ramirez is everything I think he might be, I'd have asked Kipnis to play ball this winter or next to hone his outfield skills, perhaps get some playing time in at thirdbase.

You are out of your mind as usual. Kipnis is a future all star. Ramirez is a punch and judy hitter at best.

Braves prospect yields one hit, pitches 5 2/3 scoreless innings

11/29/12 1:44 AM ET

Dominican Winter League

Licey 4, Estrellas 3

Braves prospect Julio Teheran allowed one hit over 5 2/3 scoreless innings as the last-place Tigres surprised the first-place Estrellas. Former Braves Minor Leaguer Donell Linares smacked a three-run homer and Dodgers infielder Hanley Ramirez went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Licey. Cubs prospect Nelson Perez delivered a two-run double for Oriente, which has dropped three in a row.

Gigantes 7, Toros 4

Orioles infielder Alexi Casilla went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs, helping the Gigantes snap a three-game losing streak. <

Venezuelan Winter League

•Ezequiel Carrera (RF, Navegantes del Magallanes): 0-for-5, 1 K. Carrera saw his modest three-game hit streak get snapped with his 0-fer on Wednesday. Overall, Carrera has now gone 16-for-54 in 13 games this winter.

•Luis Hernandez (SS, Tigres de Aragua): 0-for-1. Hernandez entered Wednesday’s contest in the midst of a six-game hit streak, but the streak was unfortunately snapped, even tough the switch-hitter only got one at-bat. A recent minor league signing of the Tribe, Hernandez has been impressive this winter and has gone 17-for-46 in 13 games.

•Toru Murata (RP, Navegantes del Magallanes): 1.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 1 HR. This is one of those games that Murata would probably like to have back. Murata has not exactly had the best showings this winter, and with Wednesday’s performance, his ERA now sits at 6.06. Murata had exceeded expectations all of last year at Double-A Akron, but it seems as if his average stuff may have caught up to him.

•Jesus Aguilar (1B, Leones del Caracas): 1-for-4, 3 K. Let’s start with the good here. For one, Aguilar seems to be getting into a groove where he’s playing almost every day. Also, it was nice to see him collect a hit to extend his hit streak to four games. However, plate discipline remains a concern. With three more strikeouts Wednesday, Aguilar has now struck out 24 times this winter and drawn only three walks in 18 games.

Dominican Winter League

•Juan Diaz (SS, Estrellas de Oriente): 0-for-2. Diaz went hitless for the second straight game on Wednesday and is now stuck in a mini 0-for-6 slump. Overall, Diaz has gone 22-for-83 in 29 games this winter.

•Jose Ramirez (2B, Toros del Este): 0-for-2, 1 BB, 1 K. Well, there’s a surprise; Jose Ramirez went hitless in a winter league game. Ramirez’s 0-for-2 performance snapped his three-game hit streak, but his average is still impressive at .342 in 24 games played. Considering he went hitless in this game, it’s probably fair to assume that he’ll hit for the cycle in the next game he plays.
Image
•Carlos Santana (DH, Leones del Escogido): 2-for-5, 1 K. Santana might not yet be hitting for a great average in winter ball, but he has recorded at least one hit in three of the four games he has played. Also, his 2-for-5 performance was his best so far of the winter season, so perhaps the switch-hitter is starting to settle in following a pretty decent break from baseball.

Puerto Rican Winter League

•Rob Bryson (RP, Criollos de Caguas): 1 IP, 1 H, 1 K. As has been the case all winter, Bryson was outstanding in Wednesday’s game. In seven games and 8 1/3 innings of work, Bryson has still yet to allow an earned run this winter.

•Joseph Colon (SP, Cangrejeros de Santurce): (W, 1-2), 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R/ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 HR. Colon was not exactly great on Wednesday, but he certainly was not terrible either. His five-inning performance was the longest that he has gone in any of his four outings this winter, and all three of the runs he allowed came on a three-run home run in the third inning.

•Matt Langwell (RP, Gigantes de Carolina): 1 IP, 1 H, 2 K. Langwell has pitched 5 1/3 innings this winter, and he has still yet to allow an earned run. He was especially efficient on Wednesday as he struck out two batters and recorded the third out on a fly out.

•Roberto Perez (C, Indios de Mayaguez): 1-for-3. Perez snapped an 0-for-4 funk with his one hit on Wednesday. Overall, the right-handed hitting catcher has gone 6-for-26 this winter.

Civ,

Aguilar has been a disappointment. He's trying to overcome LaPorta's effort in futility. However! All but 4 of those strikeouts came before he was farmed out to the Caracas parallel league. He's "only" struckout 4 times in his last 4 ballgames, but he's making better contact. We'll see what he does the rest of the way.

Brazil leaps into Top 20 of Men’s Baseball World Rankings

IBAF Men’s Baseball World Rankings updated following World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, Cuban games in Asia and South American Championship

IBAF Men's Baseball World Rankings

The IBAF Men’s Baseball World Rankings have been updated once again following the conclusion of the World Baseball Classic Qualifiers in Taipei City and Panama City, the Asian trip of the Cuban national team with games against Chinese Taipei and Japan and the South American Championship.

Surprise WBC Qualifier winner Brazil, which stunned Panama, Nicaragua and Colombia at Rod Carew Stadium in Panama City, made the leap into the top 20 of the World Ranking. Chinese Taipei, which won the WBC Qualifier in Taipei City, meanwhile moved back into seventh place with the expected victory.

Chinese Taipei also made up some ground towards leader Cuba with their 2-1 victory in the opener of the Thunder Series in Taichung prior to the WBC Qualifier. Cuba later also would lose twice to Japan, which solidified third place and reduced the deficit as well, surpassing the 600 points mark.

New Zealand gets ranked for the first time. The Diamondblacks reached the final game at the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Taipei City and used the accumulated points to enter the IBAF Men’s Baseball World Ranking at the 29th position.

Argentina won the XI South American Championship in Ecuador and moved from 26 to 22 in the Men’s Baseball World Ranking. They had beaten Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Bolivia on their way to the title.

Another update of the IBAF Men’s Baseball World Ranking will be released following the completion of the ongoing 26th BFA Baseball Championship in Taichung. Japan, Korea, Chinese Taipei, the Philippines and Pakistan are participating in the event.

Braves farmhand Sergio Miranda launched a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the Cangrejeros a walk-off win over Carolina in Game 1 of the teams' doubleheader. Luis Figueroa and Luis Matos also homered for Santurce in the contest -- both solo shots.

Carolina 6, Santurce 2 (7 innings)

The Gigantes rebounded in the nightcap. Pedro Valdes went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored for Carolina while Cardinals prospect Anthony Garcia walked three times and added two insurance runs with a base hit in the top of the seventh.

Venezuelan Winter League

•Ezequiel Carrera (RF-CF): 1-for-4, 1 BB, 1 SB, 1 E. Just another routine day from Carrera, reaching base twice, stealing a base, and struggling in the field. Still, this offseason has been a good start for Carrera headed into Spring Training.

•Hector Rondon (RP): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO. Make it 13 straight scoreless outings for Rondon, another player successfully using the winter league to put himself into a better position. I for one am excited to see what 2013 is going to hold for Rondon and cannot wait for the season to start.

•Eric Berger (SP): W (1-4), 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 SO. And yet another player in the Venezuelan League. Berger now has 33 strikeouts in 35.2 innings while only walking eight; he may be turning 27 in April, but there is still a chance for the left-hander, especially considering his strong SO:BB.

Puerto Rican Winter League

•Matt Langwell (RP): L (0-2), 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, 1 HR. Langwell started off his outing well, getting a grounder back to himself. The next batter finished the game with a walk-off home run. That was the first run Langwell allowed in winter ball, though, so one slipup can be forgiven.

•Giovanni Soto (RP): W (1-0), 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO. Soto, on the other hand, had a very strong game in his first multi-inning outing this winter. After six walks in 4.2 innings, Soto's no-walk showing is a strong step in the right direction.

Mexican Winter League

•Karim Garcia (RF): 2-for-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SO. Garcia just turned 37 years old, but he is still plugging away in Mexican leagues. He has hit eight home runs in 32 winter games after hitting 22 in 101 games over the summer, great numbers for the outfielder.

“Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday's success or put its failures behind and start over again. That's the way life is, with a new game every day, and that's the way baseball is.”
