The sorry Kansas City Royals are leaving town, and now the Tribe will face a stronger foe in the second-place Detroit Tigers this weekend.

Cash Kruth of MLB.com writes how during the spring training it was all about the Tigers, Twins and White Sox who were expected to battle for the Central Division title.

But . . .

On Friday, the Tigers -- 4 1/2 games back of Cleveland -- will get their first look at the first-place Indians when Detroit travels to Progressive Field to begin a three-game series.

Max Scherzer will make his fifth career start against Cleveland tonight. In his last outing, on April 24, Scherzer dominated the White Sox, allowing only four hits -- zero until the fifth inning -- while throwing eight shutout frames.

Manager Jim Leyland hopes his right-hander will fare better against the Tribe on Friday night than he has throughout his career. Scherzer is just 1-3 with a 5.73 ERA and a .286 opponents' batting average against Cleveland -- his second-highest ERA against any club which he has made at least two starts.
