Eagles fly into finals
The 20-time national champion Cibao Eagles completed yesterday the most spectacular game in history of over 25 years of of round robin play, defeating the Tigers of Licey 5 to 4 in a sudden death game, held before a packed house at the Cibao stadium, the game dedicated to Pappy-Bison.
The Eagles 10 to 9, numbers with which they won the right to face the Leones Escogido (11-7) in the final championship series of 2011-2012, arrived here weaving a string of 6 straight wins, after having a negative mark of 4 to 9.
Never before in the history of Dominican baseball has there been a "come back" like this, allowing the Eagles Cibaenas to advance to their 36th league championship series. The Cuban Raul Valdes, 1-2, with only three days off, went to the mound in relief to get the win.
Miguel Batista, relieved in the ninth and struckout the final two batters of the game to secure his fifth save of the series. The defeated one was Freddy Dolsi (1 - 2), one of the nine pitchers used by Licey giving up a walk to Elian Herrera, and allowing a run in just two thirds of an inning.
The Eagles led early in the game, getting to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly by Hector Luna, Elian Herrera scoring on the first of three runs in the game.
In the third increased the lead to 3 - 0 with two more: Elian Herrera singled and scored when Yamaico Navarro committed a throwing error on Miguel Tejada's grounder. Tejada scored on a double by the Cuban Yoenis Céspedes.
The Tigers evened the game in the fourth, 3 to 3, when Anderson Hernandez opened with a double, Erick Aybar followed with a triple and Ronny Paulino hit the first of his two homers in the game.
The Eagles responded with two more in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Joaquin Arias allowing Francisco Pena to score and Elian Herrera scored his third run of the game on an error by center fielder Alejandro De Aza.
Ronnie Paulino hit his second homer of the game in the sixth inning to cut the Eagles lead to 5-4, but from then on they were silenced by the Eagles bullpen pitchers.
In the game on offense shined the Eagles Yoenis Céspedes with a pasting of 2-4, with a double and an RBI, Elian Herrera was 2-3, with three runs scored and Hector Luna hit 2-3, with a run scored.
For Licey, Ronnie Paulino homered twice and finished 3-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, and Erick Aybar went 2-4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI.
